Pigmentation
What is it?
Pigmentation refers to the colouring of the skin, which is determined by a pigment called melanin. Produced by specialised cells known as melanocytes, melanin not only gives skin, hair and eyes their colour but also play a crucial role in protecting the skin from ultraviolet (UV) damage. Pigmentation concerns are among the most common reasons people seek professional skin treatments.
Pigmentation occurs when the skin produces either too much or too little melanin, which is the pigment responsible for skin colour. This can result in hyperpigmentation (dark spots, patches, or uneven tone) or hypopigmentation (lighter patches of skin).
Hyperpigmentation often appears as freckles, sunspots, melasma, or post-inflammatory marks after acne or injury, while hypopigmentation may occur with conditions like vitiligo or from over-exposure of UV rays.
Melasma is characterised by brown or gray-brown patches that typically develop on the face. usually on the face – particularly the cheeks, forehead, nose and upper lip. One key feature of melasma is its symmetrical appearance, with pigmentation often mirrored on both sides of the face.
The causes of melasma are predominately hormonal and genetic. It is more common in women, especially during pregnancy, menopause or with any fluctuations in hormones, such as hormone replacement therapy or birth control use. Whilst ultraviolet light significantly contributes to the development and worsening of melasma you must have a pre-disposition for it to develop. Melasma and can be triggered by medications, skincare products and stress. Understanding these triggers can help you take proactive measures to manage and prevent melasma.
The treatment is similar to pigmentation but not all treatments or products are suitable, so always ensure your skin care professional is aware that you have Melasma.
At Panacea Skin Clinics, we use advanced diagnostic tools such as digital skin analysis to assess where pigment sits within the skin layers, helping our medical team create the most effective treatment plan for you.
Causes
- UV Exposure – the biggest driver of pigmentation, causing freckles, sunspots, and solar lentigines.
- Hormones – conditions such as melasma are often triggered by hormonal changes, heat and sun exposure combined.
- Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) – dark marks left behind after acne, eczema, or trauma to the skin.
- Genetics – family history may predispose someone to freckles, sunspots, or pigmentation disorders.
- Aging – with time, uneven pigmentation becomes more visible.
