Skincare advice is everywhere, social media, friends, trends, and “miracle” products. Unfortunately, much of it is misleading or overly simplified
At Panacea Skin, we cut through the noise with evidence-based explanations grounded in skin biology and clinical experience.
Here’s the truth behind 10 common skin myths.
Myth 1: You need a 20-step routine to achieve great skin
The truth: More products don’t equal better skin.
Layering too many actives can overwhelm the skin barrier, leading to irritation, breakouts, and inflammation. Skin responds best to targeted, well-formulated ingredients used consistently. Heard of perioral dermatitis? It’s a common inflammatory rash that appears around the mouth and nose and is often linked to a compromised skin barrier.
In our clinical experience, many patients aren’t aware that they may be contributing to the problem themselves – usually by using too many products, frequent exfoliation, strong actives, or constantly switching routines. This overwhelms the skin, disrupts its protective barrier, and triggers ongoing inflammation.
✔ A simple routine with the right active ingredients is far more effective than product overload.
Myth 2: If the product tingles or burns, it means its working
The truth: Sensation is not a good indication of effectiveness.
Burning, stinging, or intense tingling usually indicates irritation or barrier disruption, not that a product is working better. When the skin barrier becomes repeatedly compromised, it can lead to inflammation, redness, increased sensitivity, breakouts, perioral dermatitis and even accelerated skin ageing or pigmentation.
While some active ingredients may cause mild, temporary sensations when first introduced, skincare should not be uncomfortable or painful with ongoing use.
✔ Effective skincare should support and strengthen the skin barrier, not stress or inflame it.
Myth 3: Oily skin doesn’t need moisturiser
The truth: ALL skin types need hydration!
When oily skin is dehydrated, it compensates by producing more oil. The solution isn’t skipping moisturiser; it’s choosing the correct texture and formulation. This is also why many people believe they have “combination skin.”
In reality, the skin is often dehydrated or barrier-compromised, not truly combination.
When the skin lacks sufficient water or lipids, it compensates by over-producing oil, particularly in the T-zone where sebaceous glands are more active. This oil production is the skin’s attempt to replenish its lipid barrier and protect itself, not a sign that moisturiser should be avoided.
When hydration and barrier support are restored, oil production often normalises naturally, and the skin becomes more balanced overall.
✔ Proper hydration helps regulate oil and supports healthy barrier function.
Myth 4: Sunscreen is only needed on sunny days
The truth: UV exposure occurs every day, and even indoors!
UVA rays penetrate clouds and glass and are the primary cause of premature ageing and preventable collagen breakdown. Daily sun protection is one of the most evidence-based anti-ageing strategies available.
In addition to UVA and UVB rays, visible light (including blue light from screens) and heat exposure can stimulate pigment-producing cells, particularly in conditions such as melasma.
Even if you work indoors, UV rays penetrate through windows, and repeated exposure to screens and heat can contribute to pigmentation and accelerated skin ageing over time – especially in pigment-prone skin types.
✔ Sunscreen is a daily essential – not a beach-only product.
Myth 5: “Natural” chemical free skincare is always safer or better
The truth: Natural does not automatically mean safe, stable, or effective.
The word “chemical” often gets a bad reputation, but everything is made of chemicals – including water! What matters isn’t whether an ingredient is natural or synthetic, but how it interacts with the skin.
Many natural ingredients can actually be highly irritating or allergenic, particularly for sensitive or compromised skin. Essential oils, plant extracts, and botanicals are common triggers for inflammation, dermatitis, and skin barrier disruption.
On the other hand, scientifically formulated ingredients are often more stable, predictable, and thoroughly tested for safety and effectiveness.
✔ Clinical skincare is about proven formulations, not marketing labels.
Myth 6: Your pores open and close - and you can shrink them
The truth: Pores don’t have muscles, so they can’t open or close.
Pore size is largely determined by genetics, skin type, oil production, and age. While you may hear that steam “opens” pores and cold water “closes” them, these effects are temporary and related to softening debris or reducing surface inflammation, not physical changes in pore size.
What makes pores appear larger is often:
- Excess oil production
- Build-up of dead skin cells
- Loss of collagen and skin elasticity over time
The good news is that while you can’t permanently shrink pores, you can minimise their appearance by keeping them clear, supporting collagen, and managing excess oil production with appropriate skincare and treatments like micro-needling and wrinkle treatments.
✔ Pore size can’t be changed permanently – but healthy, well-maintained skin can make them far less visible.
Myth 7: Facials are essential for good skin
The truth: Facials are optional, not essential.
While extractions or deep cleansing can temporarily clear blocked pores, they don’t create lasting results. Aggressive facials or frequent chemical exfoliation may actually increase irritation and acne and while hydrating facials may feel relaxing – in many cases, the visible glow comes from surface hydration, exfoliation, or increased circulation and disappears once you cleanse your skin.
While facials can feel great, they don’t usually create lasting structural changes in the skin unless they’re part of a targeted, evidence-based treatment plan.
✔ If you choose a facial, opt for gentle, hydrating, non-comedogenic treatments.
✔ Relaxation and stress reduction still have real skin benefits.
Myth 8: You should wait until wrinkles appear to start anti-ageing
The truth: Prevention works best before damage is visible.
Collagen production begins declining in our mid-20s. Supporting the skin early helps slow the biological processes that lead to visible, permanent signs of ageing later. This doesn’t mean starting treatments too early or doing anything unnecessary. Prevention is about paying attention to early changes in your skin, such as subtle texture changes, fine lines, dehydration, or loss of glow, and adjusting your routine accordingly.
Think of it like changing your wardrobe with the seasons – you wouldn’t keep wearing winter clothes when the weather heats up. Your skin’s needs change over time, and your skincare should evolve with it.
At Panacea Skin, prevention means:
- Supporting skin health before damage becomes permanent
- Using soft, conservative treatments only when appropriate
- Adjusting skincare and treatments as the skin changes
- Never treating before it’s necessary
✔ Preventative skincare is about maintaining and preserving skin strength, elasticity, and resilience.
Myth 9: Cosmetic treatments always look obvious
The truth: Overdone results are due to poor technique, not the treatment itself.
When planned conservatively and performed by trained medical professionals, aesthetic treatments should enhance natural structure, not change identity. The ideal outcome of a cosmetic treatment is that you look refreshed, not “done.”
People may comment that you look well, rested, or glowing, but they shouldn’t be able to pinpoint exactly what’s changed.
When a treatment is obvious, for example, it’s clear that lips have been augmented, this usually indicates poor planning, over-selling, over-treatment, or lack of respect for facial balance.
✔ The goal is subtlety, balance, and long-term skin health.
Myth 10: What works for someone else will work for you
The truth: Skin is individual.
Genetics, hormones, lifestyle, environment, and medical history all affect how skin behaves and responds to treatment.
“My friend/family member pays this much and gets this result.”
This is something we hear often, and we can understand why.
However, medical skin treatments are not one-size-fits-all. Results and longevity vary significantly depending on individual factors such as muscle strength, facial anatomy, skin integrity, genetics, after-care, lifestyle, metabolism, and previous treatments.
Two people can receive the same treatment and have very different outcomes, both in how it looks and how long it lasts. This doesn’t mean one result is better or worse; it simply reflects how differently each person’s body responds.
A great example of this is that you may try a makeup product or shampoo that a friend swears by, only to find it doesn’t suit you at all. That doesn’t mean the product is ineffective, it just wasn’t right for you.
✔ Personalised assessment is essential for safe, effective results.
