Scarring

Scarring

Scars are a natural part of the body’s healing process, forming from collagen when the skin repairs itself after injury, acne, or surgery. The way a scar develops depends on factors such as the depth of the wound, skin type, and genetic tendency.

Types of Scars

Scars can take many forms, including:

  • Atrophic scars – depressions in the skin, often seen after acne
  • Hypertrophic scars – raised, red scars within the boundary of the injury
  • Keloid scars – raised scars that extend beyond the original injury
  • Stretched scar – when a scar such as a surgical scar is stretched
  • Stretch marks – caused when skin stretches or shrinks too quickly
  • Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) – inflammatory response which produces an over production of melanin, usually found in darker skin types
  • Post-Inflammatory Erythema (PIE) – pink, red or purple erythema after inflammatoryreaction that causes damage to capillaries, common in lighter skin types

Although scarring is common, it can cause ongoing frustration, impacting not just appearance but also confidence and quality of life.

About Scarrings

Scars occur when collagen is produced during wound healing.

Contributing factors include:

  • Genetics and skin type, which influence how scars form and fade
  • Inflammatory conditions such as acne or eczema
  • Severity and depth of the injury or trauma
  • Delayed healing or skin picking, which disrupts recovery

Things you can do at home

Every scar is different, which is why we tailor treatment plans to each individual, combining modalities for the best outcomes.

Lifestyle practices also make a difference:

  • Avoid picking or scratching at healing skin
  • If scars are in an area where skin is likely to be stretched or in an exposed area, protect it against environmental exposure and avoid over-activity during the immediate healing phase to prevent infection and delayed healing (usually around 6 weeks)
  • Protect scars from UV exposure
  • Support skin repair with a diet rich in protein, zinc, and antioxidants
  • Stay hydrated and prioritise rest to optimise the body’s healing response
