About Broadband Light Therapy

What is the science behind Broadband Light therapy?

BBL deposits pulses of light energy that gently heat the upper layers of skin. The machine is set to the correct depth to hit the required targets.  Within the skin, the light energy is absorbed by targets, such as fine broken vessels that cause redness and brown spots or pigmented lesions that are caused by an overproduction of melanin.

The scientific and biological process destroys the target, eliminating it from the skin and restoring it to its natural beauty, blending its natural tones and making it more vibrant and youthful in appearance and touch.

What Do I Need To Do To Prepare For BBL?

  • It is advised that you have your skin checked by your regular skin specialist prior to having BBL treatments.  BBL treatments may improve the look of ANY pigmented lesion.  If the appearance of a rogue lesion is improved, it may delay detection of pre-cancerous or cancerous diagnosis
  • Avoid tanning (sun or solarium induced) or self-tanning creams in the areas to be treated.  The treatment will be rescheduled if you are tanned
  • If your skin is heavily sun-damaged, it is advisable to commence your treatments in the cooler months of the year
  • Please advise us if you are taking any medications, particularly Tetracycline (Minomycin), antibiotics or Roaccutane. You cannot have any BBL treatment if you have taken Roaccutante in the last 6 months
  • Please advise us if you are using any Vitamin A – or Retinol products in the area to be treated
  • Although we use numbing cream prior to the treatment, some patients may find the treatment uncomfortable.  If you are normally sensitive you may consider taking Paracetamol 30 minutes prior to your appointment.  Please avoid Aspirin and Ibuprofen (Nurofen)

What Happens During A Broadband Light Treatment?

  • Any area of the body can be treated.  The most popular treatments are on the face, neck, back of the hands, arms, décolletage and shoulders
  • The number of treatments needed varies depending on the person & concern
  • Your eyes will be protected with safety shields
  • You may briefly feel a warm or “rubber band snap” sensation as the light is absorbed by the targeted areas
  • Depending on the size of the area to be treated the treatment will take between 10 minutes to 1 hour
  • A serum or moisturiser will be applied and aftercare advised

What Happens After Broadband Light Therapy?

  • You may experience some redness that should resolve within a few hours
  • In most cases, you are able to return to work, apply makeup (if necessary, apply with a light patting motion) and resume most of your activities
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and hot tubs for 24-48 hours
  • Pigmented lesions will darken and gradually flake off and fade over the next 7-10 days
  • Let the skin fall off naturally and do not pick or peel
  • Most importantly, please minimise sun exposure
  • Please wear a quality zinc-based sunscreen 50+ daily and a wide-brimmed hat at all times when outdoors, even when hanging out the washing
  • To maximise and maintain your results, a commitment to avoiding sun exposure is required
  • If blistering appears, and your skin is still warm, you may apply cool packs
  • If blisters form, take care not to rupture them
  • Serums can usually be resumed after 24 hours, tell your clinician which ones you are using
  • Resume exfoliating products 2 weeks after pigment has fallen off

BROADBAND LIGHT THERAPY

THE SCIENCE

BBL deposits pulses of light energy that gently heat the upper layers of skin. The machine is set to the correct depth to hit the required targets.  Within the skin, the light energy is absorbed by targets, such as fine broken vessels that cause redness and brown spots or pigmented lesions that are caused by an overproduction of melanin.

The scientific and biological process destroys the target, eliminating it from the skin and restoring it to its natural beauty, blending its natural tones and making it more vibrant and youthful in appearance and touch.

STEP ONE

BBL Process Step One Mona Vale

BBL is placed onto the skin surface.

STEP Two

BBL Process Step Two Mona Vale

BBL light enters into the skin and is absorbed by pigment, blood vessels and other skin structures.

STEP Three

BBL Process Step Three Mona Vale

The pulse of BBL light causes the unwanted pigment and blood vessels to heat up very quickly, which stimulates your body to eliminate the pigment and enlarged vessels.

STEP Four

BBL Process Step Four Mona Vale

In addition, BBL stimulates the activation of genes associated with youthful skin, potentially adding to the clinical benefit.

How It works For Spider Veins

During BBL

BBL light enters into the skin and is absorbed by pigment, blood vessels and other skin structures.

Immediately After

The blood vessel absorbs the heat and the heat damages the vessel.

After BBL

The vessel is shut down and the body continues to absorb destroyed vessel remnants.

How It works For Pigmented Lesions

Brown Spot Forms

Unwanted benign lesion (brown spot).

During BBL

Broadband Light penetrates the skin to reach the pigmented lesion and fragment the melanin particles.
